The odds are stacked up against many of the boy and girls who are raised and study in the poorest communities. The schools in these communities do not have standard libraries or have access to reading materials. There is no difference even when the children get home, the parents cannot afford to buy the children reading materials. Some of these kids have never had an opportunity to sit with a storybook and read individually.
Center For Tomorrow started reading clubs in the most vulnerable schools. Through the reading clubs, the children have access to storybooks, children magazines, board games, puzzles such as crossword and word search. The reading clubs have created accessibly to tools that increase vocabulary, writing skills, critical thinking and social skills.
The children are always excited when it is time to meet for the book club because they feel it is a chance to know and adventure into a world beyond their surrounding and feed imagination. The children are able to review stories and interpret scenarios.
“I am now able to read faster. I also finish my puzzles very well and get all words right,” Jemima said. “I also have new friends in other classes because the book clubs have children from many different classes.”
By promoting the reading culture of children at primary level, Center For Tomorrow is giving them an opportunity to become adults who are readers and leaders. The children are stirred up with the hunger for knowledge and the development of their critical thinking abilities. The combination of these two gives them higher chances to succeed in life.
